Monday June 16 Keynote Speaker Bio: Mike Thomson

 

 

Mike graduated from the BCIT Surveying and Mapping program in 1979 and received his commission as a BC Land Surveyor in May 1983. After a decade in private practice Mike joined the City of Vancouver in leadership of the Survey Branch. In 2007 Mike left his role as City Surveyor and began a 12-year term as the Surveyor General of BC. Key projects included the move to electronic plans and the development and build of Parcel Map BC.

Mike retired as Surveyor General and Boundary Commissioner of BC in 2019 and joined the Association of BC Land Surveyors Board as an elected member soon after. Mike served 18+ years on the ABCLS Board, including as President in 2023. Mike is a Life Member of the ABCLS and was the 2023 recipient of the PSC Champlain Award in recognition of national leadership and outstanding contributions to the land surveying profession.

Mike currently works as a Referee Instructor for FIBA, the International Basketball Association, following on a 41 year on-court career, including Summer Olympic Games as both an on-court official and as a Referee Instructor and multiple World Championships.

Tuesday June 17 Keynote Speaker Bio: Erin Kline

 

Erin Kline is the Executive Director of Fraser Academy’s Outreach Centre, FAx, which offers remedial programs for individuals, as well as professional development for schools and educators locally, provincially, nationally, and internationally.

Passionate about ensuring all children have an opportunity to be successful learners, Ms. Kline teaches teachers how to reach the 1 in 5 students in their classrooms with language-based learning differences. Her expertise is offered via workshops and courses — in areas such as Differentiated Learning, Competency and Content-based IEPs, Structured Literacy, Executive Function in the Classroom, and The Writing Process — as well as through working directly within various schools, including an indigenous focus VSB school, and district literacy programs, to integrate structured literacy into their programs and classrooms. All of these focus on helping at-risk learners be successful.

As a member of the BC Ministry of Education’s Program Assessment Team, Ms. Kline contributes to the review of quality standards and practices of teacher training programs in BC. She has served on the CAIS Standards and Accreditation Refresh committee, the ISABC professional development committee, two CAIS Accreditation Visiting Committees, and was a founding member on the CAIS Middle School Student Leadership Camp Committee. You will also find her presenting at a variety of local, national and international conferences on topics related to differentiation and personalized learning.

Ms. Kline holds an MBA in Executive Management, a Master of Education in Curriculum Studies, and is a certified Orton-Gillingham tutor.

Wednesday June 18 Keynote Speaker Bio: Simon Edgett

 

 

Simon is an experienced executive and technology leader with a background in telecommunications, information technology, and business development. With a primary focus on transformation and change management, he helps organizations navigate evolving technological and business landscapes.

As a co-founder and vice-president of one of British Columbia’s early internet providers, Simon played a role in the province’s digital growth. Over the years, he has worked in startups, guided companies through IPOs during the dot-com era, and held leadership roles in national corporations.

He takes a practical approach to building high-performance teams and leading mission-critical projects. With extensive experience in steering organizations and teams through periods of transition, Simon brings a strategic yet hands-on leadership style to complex digital initiatives.

He currently serves as Head of Digital Systems at Elk Valley Resources, a British Columbia-based mining company.
